The Güira is a cylindrical percussion instrument used to play merengue. Along with the Tambora, it constitutes the percussion base of the rhythm. Güiras are made of a tin sheet, bent until the ends meet to form a cylinder with a diameter of around five inches. The surface of the sheet has been filled with small regular bumps made by hitting a nail softly on the opposite face (interior side of the cylinder) of the sheet. Most Güiras have a handle attached. The Güira is played using a special type of fork or small trident, sliding it up and down and tapping it against the outer side of the cylinder.
La Güira es un instrumento de percusión usado para tocar merengue. Junto con la Tambora, constituye la percusión base de este ritmo. Las Güiras se hacen con planchas de hojalata que se doblan hasta formar un cilindro de aproximadamente 15 centímetros de diámetro. La plancha de hojalata se ha cubierto de pequeños abultamientos (como ronchas) hechos martillando suavemente un clavo en la cara opuesta de la plancha (lado interior del cilindro). La mayoría de las Güiras tienen un mango de dónde sostenerlas. La Güira se toca con un tenedor o tridente especial, deslizándolo hacia arriba y hacia abajo y golpeándolo ligeramente contra el lado exterior del cilindro.
